The publication of Reporters Without Borders’ latest report on press freedom unfortunately came to confirm what we have been discussing recently from this corner.
According to the annual ranking, Greece lost 5 spots in 2020, ending up being 70th among 180 countries. Of course, because numbers alone say nothing, it is good to see a comparative picture in relation to our close environment.
So, among the 27 countries of the European Union, our country occupies the fourth place from the bottom, having a better score only from Bulgaria, Malta and Hungary.
This fact, that is, in terms of press freedom, Greece scores lower than countries such as Costa Rica, Namibia, or Cape Verde, is due, according to the NGO announcement, to incidents such as obstruction or arrest of journalists from the authorities, the biased presentation of issues on public television, but also – of course – the recent assassination of journalist George Karaivaz.
Worst of all, however, seems to be the fact that none of the above seems to be a random deviation that will not be repeated next year. Therefore, the descent is expected to continue.
