Yesterday’s announcement that Twitter has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Elon Musk for $ 44 billion, puts an end to the current phase of negotiations and opens the next chapter, that includes the future of the popular social media platform.
This chapter, by all estimates, is impossible to predict as far as its exact contents go.
At the heart of the forthcoming changes lie the fundamental conflict between the economic and social goals of the platform. Musk himself has made it clear that social media algorithms need to be more open source, allowing users to choose what they see and what they do not see on the platform, but also how that happens.
This would potentially reduce the advertising revenue of Τwitter, something that might run counter to the will of the shareholders of the hitherto listed company.
Perhaps that is why the new owner has stated his intention to take Twitter private, in order to reduce her dependence on advertisements and to promote freedom of speech, however he perceives it.
Some even talk about plans of turning twitter into a subscription platform.
Of course nothing can be taken for granted, except for the fact that the immediate future of Twitter will undoubtedly be very interesting.
